I love it that the season of Summer has finally arrived here in the Midwest.
I love the lazy, hazy, crazy days, and the smell of fresh-cut grass rising through the air.
I love hearing the laughter of children, and listening to the birds singing while watching the dragonflies dance through the yard, as if they’re putting on their own personal show just for me. But…
You knew there had to be a but…right?
But… If I am being honest, I feel it’s only fair to share with you that I have a summertime love/hate relationship — there, I’ve actually said it out loud!
For me, as much as I love being outside in nature, there are one (or more) things where I draw the line, and that’s when it comes to the myriad of flying insects, bugs, and mosquitoes!
So in keeping with my passion for staying true to all things natural (as much as I can), in all areas of my life, it makes perfect sense to find the safest, yet most effective way(s) to deal with this seasonal issue.
Did you know that according to Dr. Abou Donia, research has shown that the chemical DEET (the most widely used insect repellent in the U.S), “has been shown to cause neurons to die in regions of the brain that control muscle movement, learning, memory, and concentration?” And that “children are at a higher risk for brain changes after DEET exposure because their skin absorbs it more readily?”
I promise when you begin using products that contain pure, organic or wildcrafted ingredients they will be kinder, gentler, and healthier for you and your family – and your skin and your lungs will thank you too!
Remember to keep in mind that every situation and person is unique, and what may work for someone else may not work for you.
You might have to try a few different approaches, or layering, until you find what works best for you and your family.
I love using the layering approach. I apply the cream or lotion on my skin, and make a spray with the same ingredients to spritz on my clothes (keeping away from your face and eyes), while burning a candle(s) on the patio.
I have been told that I have the “best smelling” yard in the neighborhood, which happily attracts the neighbors, while detracting any uninvited bugs, flies, or mosquitoes!
